Head outdoors to burn off the mince pies
Despite good intentions, most of us will have treated ourselves to one too many treats this Christmas. But the good news is you can burn off lots of those excess festive calories by going on a winter walk.
This year’s Festival of Winter Walks – organised by the Ramblers – runs until January 8, and offers something for everyone (so you don’t have to be a seasoned hiker to put your best foot forward and get some fresh winter air).
“Winter is one of the best times to go out for a walk,” says Simon Barnett, the Ramblers’ director of walking development. “There’s something truly magical about putting on your hat and gloves, heading out with your loved ones and perhaps even being the first person to leave footprints in the snow.
“Our popular Festival of Winter Walks is our Christmas gift to the nation, so that everyone can enjoy the wonders of a winter walk. Our walks during the festival are free, fun, friendly and open to everyone, so wrap up warm and join us as we enjoy the season the way we know best, on our feet.”
Here’s a glimpse of what’s on offer:
Join a Ramblers group on one of hundreds of free walks taking place all over Britain. These range from short festive strolls to blow away the cobwebs, right up to whole-day hikes to kick-start New Year’s resolutions – and everything in between.
If you’re new to walking or you haven’t done much exercise lately, why not go on a short health walk? In England you can join the country’s largest network of health walk schemes called Walking for Health (delivered in partnership by the Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support). Or if you’re in Wales, you can walk with Let’s Walk Cymru, lead by Ramblers Cymru.
Don’t want to walk with a group or want to lead your own walk? Take a look at Ramblers Routes, an online library of more than 2,500 of Britain’s best walks, and start planning your day out.
Meanwhile if you’re in Scotland, download the free Medal Routes app – available for apple and Android devices – to find more than 1,100 short walks across the country.
